The Dacryodes excelsa also called Candlewood ,Gummier or Tabonuco in spanish is originally form Puerto Rico. Early european settlers used its resin to make candles and torches therefore its name candlewood. Most specimen range from 18 to 25 metres in height. Its Roots grow deep and which makes the tree resistand to hurricanes

The wood itself is rather hard and heavy and can be compared to mahagony. In its native regions it is used for furniture building and construction work alike.

The seeds of the Tabonuco are part of the Puerto Rican amazon’s diet, an endangered parrot.
